Construction worker killed in Boston

A construction worker was killed when he was working on the demolition of the Government Centre Parking Garage in Boston on Saturday. Officials said that the worker suffered a "substantial fall" while on a small crane.

During the incident, the parking garage which was preparing for a demolition suffered a partial collapse, the cause of the collapse is yet to be determined. Boston Police Captain Kelley McCormick said that the worker was using one of the "smaller worker cranes" and not the large yellow ones, the crane fell approximately eight to nine stories. The identity of the worker is not yet revealed. Boston Fire Commissioner John Dempsey said that the witnesses reported the worker using a heavy piece of machinery when the floor "buckled" and the machine fell. A passerby who witnessed the collapse was also taken into the hospital, they said that the worker was "indirectly involved" with the collapse. EMTs reported that the witness appeared uninjured.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said that what happened is a horrible tragedy and the officials are doing everything to find out what happened, the cause of the collapse. He added that "this is a very complex site and the workers who take on the risk of this ....their families should never have to worry about whether they're (coming) home at night". Meanwhile, the area around the parking garage has been shut down, including the underground train station and on and off-ramps leading to Interstate 93, causing severe traffic congestion along these routes.
