Non-profit helps candidates from low-income families find jobs
The Knowledge House is a New York City-based non-profit with a mission to close gaps in the education and employment pipeline with a focus to find jobs in the tech sector. The organization which started in the Bronx is now expanding into New Jersey.
Among the people impacted was Quina Berry, while finishing up community college Berry was exploring career opportunities, "I was stuck in a rut of tutoring jobs or swimming instructor jobs." She was looking to work in the tech sector but didn't know how to go about it, that's when she got in touch with The Knowledge House. Co-founder Joe Carrano says it's "an organization that provided tech education and workforce training for low-income people". Carrano also mentions that the non-profits' missing is "to expose people to this stuff and fast track their learning so they could get connected to employment as quickly as possible" and "the program is set up to get them real-world experience."
It's a free, 12 months intensive program to prepare youth and young adults for tech-based career opportunities from cybersecurity, to web development, data science, and more. After her training, Berry landed an internship at a software company called Red Hat and was later promoted to associate product manager.
The non-profit has already helped 2000 people and counting, it is currently looking for applicants in four cities including New York and Newark where they partner with Brick Education Network.
