Nebraska to suspend State Education Board?

While the entire Nation tries to get a grip over the employment scenario, employees of the Nebraska State Education Board are a little bit more on the fence than others.
Nebraska is one of six states in the country where the State Education Board is elected and the Board appoints the commissioner, said a 2021 report by the National Association of State Boards Education. The State Lawmakers on Tuesday went into session regarding the constitutional amendment of the Board. Many proposed that they do away with the Department entirely and make the education commission and Department of Education accountable to the governor. This way the people can hold the governor accountable rather than a board whose members are comparatively unknown. The department is in charge of many functions including hiring teachers and setting up the curriculum; opponents of the proposal believe that if the governor is in charge then every four years there will be a complete change of the education system when new governors are appointed.
Amidst all this, little to no emphasis is being put on another important topic. The State Education Board employs more than 500 people, employees are concerned that if the Board is dissolved they will be jobless indefinitely. The State Lawmakers have given no statement regarding what will be done with the existing employees, will they be transferred to other departments? given provisions? nobody knows. There is a chance that many would be forced to take up jobs below their capabilities. Such uncertainty at a time when finding suitable employment, especially in the K-12 sector is already stiff, is concerning.
