RaDonda Vaught was found guilty in March of criminally negligent homicide and gross neglect of an impaired adult after she accidentally administered the wrong medication. Given her lack of prior offenses, the maximum sentence is unlikely for her. The presentencing report rated her risk of reoffending as "low". As of now, Vaught faces three to six years in prison on the gross neglect conviction and one to two years on the criminally negligent homicide conviction.
The fact that Vaught faces any criminal penalties at all is a rallying point for many nurses who were already fed up with poor working conditions which were worsened by the pandemic. The crowd waited outside as they listened to the sentencing through loudspeakers and even cheered when some of the victim's relatives said they wouldn't want any jail time for Vaught.
