Macy's is offering corporate workers a chance to volunteer at stores
The famous retail chain Macy's has not been having a pleasant year so far, it's fair to say that they have been railroaded by the labor shortage crisis. During the beginning of the pandemic, the company suffered a $3.6 billion loss which they are yet to recover from.
As we approach the holiday season all retail owners are panicking to fill an estimated 1 million labor shortage in their stores. This holiday season becomes even more important for Macy's as it is their golden ticket to make up for the losses. Previously, the holiday rush accounts for almost 40 percent of Macy's profits. So far they have increased the base limit of hourly wages to $15 per hour and offered to cover the tuition cost of store employees. Their brand new program "Experience Elevation Elves" asks office workers to help out in stores. From internal memos, it has been determined that Macy's has asked their corporate/office workers "to lend a helping hand" by volunteering to work at stores during the holiday rush, they would essentially fold clothes, clear dressing rooms and restock merchandise while the other store employees engage with the customers. The email sent to employees encourages them to cover up to three shifts from 9 am to 5 pm during holidays like Black Friday. Karina Frayter, a spokesperson said that Macy's has a long-standing tradition of giving employees a chance to volunteer and work alongside store workers. Many current and former employees volunteer during the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.
The chain hopes to fill 76,000 positions at its stores in Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury and well as its warehouse and call centers.
