Hiram Johnson High School in Sacramento had to be put on a temporary administrative lockdown after a brawl that broke out among students escalated which resulted in multiple staff members sustaining injuries.
On Thursday morning multiple students belonging to the high school got into a fight at Tahoe Park east neighborhood. As the fight escalated staff members tried to intervene in an attempt to stop the fight but instead got injured. The staff members declined to seek prosecution.
The situation got so serious that the school administration had to call first responders to treat the staff members and detain the students. According to police reports, staff members were trying to initially break a fight between a small group of students. When several others joined in, the situation quickly got out of hand. Officers arrived on campus and escorted the students off-campus. The assaulted staff members were immediately taken to a nearby hospital and the campus was put on immediate administrative lockdown for the safety and security of both students and staff said, Officer Karl Chan. This incident brought to light multiple issues, the first being that teachers and caregivers are paid incredibly low wages to endure such hostility at their workplace. Second, due to the staffing shortage, schools are already understaffed and ill-equipped to deal with physical fights. This incident will put some of the school's existing staff out of commission. As a result, once the administrative lockdown was lifted, ensuring that the school was safe, extra security and supervisory staff were stationed at the school "to preserve a safe learning environment" said the district's statement. The school has opened its counseling centers to help students.
