Allentown lower part-time employment age

The City of Allentown has lowered its seasonal part-time employment age requirements from 16 to 15. However, proper working papers are required to be employed.

The city's communications manager says they "saw a need to update the city ordinance, but it was magnified by the presence of a tight labor environment." The change applies to the cashier and attendant positions and lifeguards for city pools. The new age limit is consistent with the Red Cross, which certifies people as young as 15 for lifeguard training. In order to become a lifeguard candidate, a teen must maintain valid certification or have the ability to pass the following courses: American Red Cross Lifeguarding, American Red Cross First Aid, and American Red Cross CPR/AED for the professional rescuer.

Communications Manager Genesis Ortega said "we're also trying to create economic opportunity for our residents at minimal costs to them", "The City received a grant through City Centre Allentown so that residents can get certified at no cost. A job is a great way for our youth to spend the summer."

The city will hold open interviews for seasonal positions on May 23 from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Recreational Office, May 29 from 2 pm to 6 pm, and May 30 from 12 pm pt 8 pm at Cedar Beach Pool.
