200+ companies join pledge to reach net-zero carbon by 2040
More than 200 companies including big names like Twitter, Salesforce and Procter & Gamble signed a climate pledge that aims to reduce carbon emissions over the next two decades. The project is a collaboration between Amazon and the advocacy group Global Optimism. When a company joins the pledge they agree to measure their greenhouse gas reports on a regular basis and to find and implement strategies to cut done down on carbon emissions at different steps of their business such as production or shipping.
The companies are also ultimately agreeing to net-zero carbon by 2040. Some experts point out that for the plan to be effective, it requires high levels of transparency and accurate calculations of the costs to remove carbon. In total, all signatories on the pledge generate an annual revenue of more than $1.8 trillion and employ more than 7 million workers across 26 industries in 21 countries. Other companies that signed the pledge earlier this year include Visa, Pepsi, Heineken and Alaska Airlines.
