The pandemic crushed the 5-day work week
Employees are heading back to offices and old routines like long commutes, train rides and face-to-face meetings are revived. But one thing has changed- the five-day workweek. Now that the pandemic has made remote work the norm for many white-collar employees, fewer employees will be chained to their desks. Kathy Hochul, New York's governor acknowledged the impact of this historic shift this month when she said, "It may never be a five-day week again." She even added, "It may be four days with flexibility. It may be three and a half."
NYC Mayor Eric Adams echoed this idea, alluding to the end of the customary work week where employees dutifully troop into the office every day. He said, "We are moving into a new era of working and what New York is going to look like."
Offices are becoming less soiled and less office-like to attract employees. Many workers say that they'd rather skip their commutes which have also become more expensive due to high gas prices- unless there are some attractive perks like free lunch or a yoga class waiting for them at work.
