Many Black employees do not want to return to offices

With employers likely to summon employees back to offices in 2022, many Black Americans find the thought of returning to work discomfiting. While polls suggest that some workers are content to be back at offices to work, Black workers told CBS MoneyWatch that being in a predominantly White workspace can take an emotional toll on them. They said that working from home offers a measure of inner peace and even helps them do their jobs better.

"It definitely feels more comfortable at home. I don't have to worry so much about my hair and the way I dress — you don't have to answer dumb questions about your hair", said Ashley Brooks from Tennessee. These sentiments are common for many people of color even for many in corporate America. For decades, Black and Hispanic workers have reported feeling marginalized at work and being relegated to roles that pay much low even when they qualify for high-paying positions. Black women especially say that a typical workday involves them overlooking microaggressions from co-workers, ignoring flippant comments about their natural hairstyles or suppressing emotions lest they be labeled an "angry black woman."
