Annual pay rises to $110,000 for new Walmart trucker drivers

Walmart is increasing the pay for its truck drivers to $110,000 in their first year on the job. Walmart said in a blog post on Thursday that drivers with previous experience working for them can earn even more based on their tenure and location. The company has 12,000 workers that drive its trucks.

Prior to this increase, the salary for new drivers was $87,500 in their first year. Walmart said that it hired about 4,500 truck drivers last year, which was the most in its history. A Walmart spokesperson said that the company will pay for the driver's cost of earning a commercial driver's license, which can be around $4,000 to $5,000. She said, "We will continue to hire based on need to support growth of the business."

Walmart goes ahead with this recruitment push while the country battles a truck driver shortage which has also worsened the supply chain snags and delayed the products reaching the shelves. Meanwhile, President Biden announced on Monday a plan to hire more women and veterans into the industry.
