Capitol Hill staff go about their day-to-day work uneventfully despite having to evacuate the building a few seconds ago due to a bomb threat. This sounds unnerving but the frequency of violent attacks on Capitol Hill has increased exponentially especially since the January 6th riots, to the point where staff finds this to be a part and parcel of their job.
Sasha Galberth who started working for Rep. David Trone just a month ago panicked when a message appeared on her screen from the US Capitol police that there was an active bomb threat at the Health and Human Services building on Capitol grounds. As she rushed to employees coming out of the building to check if they were okay or needed to go home, most of them seemed to behave like this was another day at work, which seemed even more disturbing to Galberth. Although many of these threats of violence since Jan 6th riots turned out to be false alarms, every employee in Capitol Hill is constantly in a state of panic and always alert to their scenarios. Everybody is agitated expecting another attack or violence to break out any minute. On the other hand, the regularity of these evacuations has sadly gotten employees accustomed to them. According to the D.C Office of Unified Communications, so far there have been 70 threats this year. In the past 10 days alone, there was a bomb threat at the Department of Labor and a suspicious package was sent to Rep. Ilhan Omar. In August a man parked a truck outside the building and threatened to blow up two blocks of Washington.
