April Jones was walking by some pellets inside the South Carolina Walmart when she felt a sharp pain under her right foot. She quickly discovered a rusted nail logged into her foot and got the wound treated immediately at a hospital. Sadly an infection followed which eventually led Jones to undergo three separate operations and amputate most of her right leg. She's been confined to a wheelchair for six years now and has sued Walmart for damages.
Jones' legal team claims that the injury has significantly reduced her quality of life and caused her major physical and emotional trauma. They also said that Walmart and their staff knew about or didn't take action against an environment that is very unsafe for customers.
Last month, a jury in South Carolina's Florence County awarded Jones $10 million in damages to cover present and future medical bills. This is the second time a jury has passed a verdict in favor of a multimillion payout for the customer. Recently, jurors in Alabama's Mobile County awarded a woman $2.1 million in damages after she sued Walmart for an incident that occurred in 2016 where she was falsely accused of and arrested for stealing groceries through the store's self-checkout lanes.
Walmart spokesperson Randy Hargrove said that the company has already filed pot-trial motions with the court. Hargrove insisted that Walmart works hard to ensure the safety and comfort of their customers and enhance their shopping experience. He thanked the jury for their service but said that the company does not believe that the verdict is just and supported by the evidence presented by Jones's legal team. They believe that her injury was not caused due to the incident in the store.
