Amazon hiring 125,000 workers; bonuses for some

Amazon plans to hire 125,000 workers as permanent warehouse and logistics workers. The company is now hiring in preparation for the upcoming holiday season with higher wages, better benefits and bonuses to attract more applicants. Amazon said that these jobs would pay a starting wage of $18 per hour, higher than the company's minimum wage of $15 and some of the job roles would get up to $3000 sign-on bonuses. Further, last week Amazon said that it would begin to pay 4-year college tuition to most of its workers.

Many retail stores and companies struggle to find workers and have raised their pay and benefits to overcome this staffing shortage. According to BLS data, there were 879,000 retail jobs left unfilled in July and 222,000 warehouse and logistics jobs unfilled. Amazon's CFO Brian Olsavsky said on Friday that the company is spending more money on signing and incentives as the labor market gets more competi9tive.
