AOC to introduce bill to extend Pandemic Unemployment Insurance till 2022
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez plans to introduce a bill to extend the pandemic unemployment benefits till February 2022. In her announcement, she added that her bill would extend federal unemployment programs established under the 2020 CARES Act that expired on Labor Day. As the pandemic assistance ended, millions of families and the unemployed lost their access to aid. The $300 weekly booster also came to an end. AOC said that it was disappointing on both sides of the aisle to end the pandemic unemployment assistance while the country has not fully recovered from the consequences of the pandemic. 

Many lawmakers have blamed the assistance for the recipients not seeking out jobs as the number of job openings even surpassed the number of unemployed in the country. However, several studies have shown that the unemployment benefits did not have any effect on hiring and that the concerns over the virus and challenges associated with childcare remain to be some of the top reasons for it.
