Fortune appoints first female editor-in-chief after 92 years

Alyson Shontell has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief at Fortune, becoming the first female to hold the position after 92 years. Shontell joins from the digital media company Insider where she worked as a co-editor in chief of the business section. She starts at Fortune on October 6th as announced by the chief executive of the company Alan Murray in an email newsletter. He announced that Shontell would be in charge of content across Fortune's magazine, website, conferences, newsletters, videos, podcasts and the Fortune Connect platform.

He also added that Alyson was the perfect fit to join Fortune in its second century "with her love for journalism and her digital chops." "As employee number six at Insider, she helped shape and build the most successful pure-play digital business journalism franchise of our time", he said. As Alyson Shontell replaces Clinton Leaf who stepped down from the job in June, Fortune now becomes part of media outlets that have women as their top editors, a job title historically dominated by men.
