Federal unemployment benefits to expire early

To help the public cope with the unemployment caused due to the pandemic, the D.C. Department of Employment Services had introduced a series of federal programs. These included: Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, Federal Pandemic Unemployment, Compensation, and Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation. The validity of these plans was extended till September 6 as a part of the American Rescue Plan Act.

On Tuesday D.C. announced that the pandemic unemployment plans will expire as of September 4th, 2021, and those who are unemployed will have to apply again and provide proof of employment. Those availing benefits from the traditional unemployment schemes will not be affected by this said the DOES.

Work search requirements that were put on hold will be reinstated as of August 30th, 2021. Citizens who want to claim unemployment benefits of any kind will have to show a record of completing at least two job search activities each week and register to be on the registry of the American Job Centre.DOES also plans to launch a new and improved website with live interactive functions making it easier for users.
