1000+ NYC workers fired over vaccine mandate

New York City fired more than a thousand workers over not complying with the city's covid 19 vaccine mandate. The Mayor's office confirmed this on Monday. 1,430 workers lost their jobs and they represent 1% of the 370,000-person city workforce. The number of job terminations was far fewer than expected before the Friday deadline to get the vaccine.

Roughly 4,000 workers were sent notices by the city asking them to show proof that they received at least two doses of the vaccine or else they'd lose their jobs. Three-fourths of those workers were already on leave without pay for months because they missed an earlier deadline to get the vaccine so as to remain on their jobs. Mayor Eric Adam's office however said that hundreds of workers produced proof of their vaccine shots after being notified that they'd be fired.

Mayor Adams said in a statement, "City workers served on the frontlines during the pandemic, and by getting vaccinated, they are, once again, showing how they are willing to do the right thing to protect themselves and all New Yorkers." He added, "Our goal was always to vaccinate, not terminate, and city workers stepped up and met the goal placed before them."
