Med Legs is a podcast started by medical students of the University of Pennsylvania. This podcast was founded by Michaela Hitchner and a few fellow students in the year 2020. All the students enrolled in a university do not have the same economics or cultural background, that being said some might be more privileged in terms of finances or experience. This is what Michael Perez noticed during his med school interviews while chatting up with other interviewees, Perez is a first-generation doctor while one of his colleagues included the ambassador's son. When Hitchner heard about this anecdote she was reminded of how her entire undergraduate experience was this.
Med Legs was started to help first-generation low-income (FGLI) medical students to cope with the requirements of med school. The podcast has a total of 8 episodes covering multiple topics such as med school interviews, side jobs to pursue, and other such tips and tricks. The podcast has as of now crossed 700 streams. They also contain insights from alumni and other physicians. This podcast gives FGLI students more visibility and accessibility, many FGLI students come from smaller areas without many resources, Med Legs aspires to provide a road map for FGLI students to navigate medical school and built themselves up for success during the extremely competitive residency period. Like many other endeavors, this was also a by-product of necessity during the pandemic. Hitchner was part of a student support group for FGLI students started by Perex during the pandemic when he noticed that they faced different issues than their peers.
