Hollywood workers to stage a walkout on Monday
The members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) which is a union for Hollywood production workers has said that they will walk out of their jobs on Monday to initiate a strike if the demands of the workers are not met.
It is no surprise that the pandemic allowed television and other online streaming platforms to rake in massive amounts of profit, as people channeled their social life into watching things online. However, the IATSE believes that the workers haven't received any share or benefits of this profit. In fact, they now work a little longer. The strike is an ultimatum to fulfill their demands of the new and improved bathroom and meal breaks, adequate rest periods, and a pay rise for entry-level wages, all the demands are put forth in a codified manner in a collective bargaining agreement. The union consists of over 60,000 members including stage builders, costume designers, make-up artists, and many other on-set workers. Officials have been engaged in negotiations with the union reps in order to avoid a strike.
Labor union strikes have been increasing throughout the state, it shows the strict stands taken by unions against fairly large corporates. Kellogs factory workers are on strike in 5 five states. A labor strike in Nabisco ended after weeks when the workers got their demands. Labor unions also communicate with the public and urge them to show solidarity by boycotting the products in the case of Oreo and Ritz crackers. The tight labor market situation in the United States strengthens the labor unions as employers cannot afford to let go of many people.
