Meatpacking and farm workers to receive $600 relief payment

The US Department of Labor announced on Tuesday that meatpacking and farm workers who were severely affected by the pandemic will receive up to $600 per person as a relief payment. The grants are part of a new $700 million aid program started by the department. The officials said that these grants are to cover some of the expenses workers bore themselves to buy protective equipment or during unpaid leaves due to the virus.

President of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union Marc Perrone said that while the rest of America found safety in their homes, these workers continued work as they ensured food supply every single day. Meatpacking workers faced some of the worst outbreaks of the virus over time, he added. The UFCW union estimates that at least 132 meatpacking workers died due to covid and around 22,000 were infected. The funds will be distributed to the workers through a group og=f non-profit organizations that work with the government. Additionally, the US Department of Agriculture will also announce another $700 million aid program to support vendors, food processors, farmers markets and distributors affected by the pandemic
